How to Calculate Effective Labor Rate (ELR)

Effective labor rate (ELR) is what your shop actually earns per billed labor hour after discounts, policy work and internal rates are mixed in. Compare it with your posted door rate to see how much rate you are giving away.

Formula

Effective Labor Rate = Total Labor Sales ÷ Total Labor Hours Sold

Worked example

EXAMPLE NUMBERS ONLY – not industry benchmarks.
Example numbers: $84,000 labor sales ÷ 700 hours sold = $120.00 ELR. If the posted rate is $150, ELR is 80% of door rate.

FAQ

Should warranty and internal work be included?

Shops often calculate ELR overall and also by pay type (customer pay, warranty, internal). Pick one method and use it consistently.

What is the difference between ELR and door rate?

Door rate is the posted hourly rate. ELR is what you actually collected per hour sold after discounts and mix.

How often should I check ELR?

Monthly is common; many managers also watch it weekly.
